Back In Blood (The End Records)

Just like Marie Osmond was a little bit country and Donnie was a little bit rock & roll, so Finland’s The 69 Eyes are a little bit goth and a little bit rock & roll. Actually, make that a lot rock & roll. Back In Blood, their tenth studio album, essentially channels late ‘80s Sunset Strip rock through the filter of the macabre. That means lots of references to death (‘Dead Girls Are Easy’, ‘The Good, The Bad & The Undead’) and horror movies (‘Lips of Blood’ is the title of a Jean Rollin vampire film, ‘Suspiria Snow White’ name-checks the Dario Argento classic, ‘Hunger’ was inspired by Tony Scott’s The Hunger), but Back In Blood inspires more head-banging and booty-shaking than Goth-approved jazz hands. The monochromatically-dressed masses will certainly abide the Sisters of Mercy-ish ‘Lips of Blood’, while rockers will hear the resurrection of Guns ‘N Roses on ‘Dead Girls Are Easy’, with singer Jyrki’s baritone croon alternately calling to mind Andrew Eldritch, Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison. Always passionate, always melodic, Back In Blood goes down smooth whether your poison is Jack ‘n Coke or absinthe straight-up.

Terrifying tracks: ‘Eternal’, ‘Dead Girls Are Easy’, ‘Dead ‘N Gone’

Rating: 7/10

Sex-O MiXXX-O (Thirteenth Planet Records)

If amyl nitrate is the perfect drug on which to listen to the the fucked-up industrial mayhem of the Revolting Cocks then E is the ideal pharmaceutical with which to enjoy Sex-O MiXXX-O. This remix companion to RevCo’s last studio album, Sex-O Olympic-O, tunes down the guitars and bumps up the beats in the name of further securing the band’s supremacy on dance floors frequented by Goths and rivetheads. RevCo works best when indulging in its sheer ridiculousness, like the hero worship of ‘Lewd Ferrigno (Club On mix)’ and sexy guitar rock of ‘Red Parrot (Juarez Tunnel mix)’. Crowd favourite ‘I’m Not Gay’ benefits from slinkier beats and founder Al Jourgenson’s modulated voice, while ‘Abundant Redundancy (Clockworks and Cold Steel mix)’ puts the industry in industrial. Although less blatantly insane than previous RevCo records, Sex-O MiXXX-O oozes big sexy fun and promises more than a condom’s worth of bodily fluids.

Everyone’s favourite serial killer, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), returned last night in the Season 4 premiere of Dexter on TMN.

Entitled ‘Living The Dream’, the episode opened (disturbingly) with our introduction to Dexter’s next nemesis. Dubbed ‘The Trinity Killer’ by a returning Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), he’s a 30-year veteran at killing young women. (John Lithgow is creepily effective in an as yet non-speaking role. Can’t wait to see more of him, although less naked ass is fine.)

Elsewhere, an increasingly dishevelled Dexter is slowly getting used to balancing fatherhood, marriage, work and serial killing. (One sequence brilliantly parodies the show’s opening.) But the added work is making him sloppy on the job, leading to the untimely release of a thug named Benny Gomez. Fortunately, Dexter’s dad Harry (James Remar) is always there to remind his son that his “dark passenger” needs to be satisfied. Goodbye, Benny Gomez.

Other plot strands teased in the series’ opening include an unexpected affair between Laguarda and Angel (!), and Deb’s continuing probe into her father’s CIs (including, in a welcome cameo, genre vet Adrienne Barbeau, looking, shall we say, like she’s had a bit of work done).

All told, ‘Living The Dream’ promises another solid season of dark humour and even darker personal revelations. Will Deb discover her brother’s pastime? And how will the Trinity Killer inspire or affect Dexter? Dex’s struggle to satisfy his need to kill is being severely challenged by his desire to be a good husband and father. “Can I have it all?” he asks himself at one point, and it’s a question every man – and especially every American no doubt – has asked himself at one point.

Now Playing: Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights

Posted in Uncategorized on September 27, 2009 by darklordbunnykins

The Country’s “Best Halloween Event” Opens Friday, September 25

Guests Will Live Blockbuster Horror Films In-Person As They Are “Ripped from the Silver Screen”

ORLANDO, FL (September 25, 2009) – Think of the horror film moments that stay with you.  The moments that push you back in your theater seat and make you look away.  The screams of audience members in a darkened theater.  The things you see again at 3 a.m.

This year, those moments come alive and surround you during Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights:  Ripped From the Silver Screen.  You will be trapped by “SAW’s” maniacal serial killer Jigsaw, come face-to-fangs with “The Wolfman” and be chased by the twisted “Chucky” doll.

And that’s just the beginning: all eight haunted houses, six scarezones and two live shows are inspired by blockbuster horror films. Until now, you’ve only been able to watch the action in horror films like “SAW,” “The Wolfman,” and “Chucky.” But at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, these films and more have been transformed into live experiences that put you in the middle of your worst cinematic nightmares.

Universal Orlando has worked closely with Lionsgate® and Twisted Pictures to rip the popular “SAW” films from the screen and turn them into an authentic and frightening live experience. Guests will come face to face with the films’ sadistic killer Jigsaw and his traps before the next installment of the series hits theaters in late October.

Through a collaborative partnership with Universal Pictures, guests will also live the horror of the upcoming “The Wolfman,” and the fantasy-adventure story “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” before the films are shown in theaters. “The Wolfman” will be released in February 2010; “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” is in theaters in late October. The popular “Chucky” films also come to life through the resort’s partnership with Universal Pictures.

“This year, we’ve created an entirely new level of fear at Halloween Horror Nights,” said Jim Timon, senior vice president of entertainment for Universal Orlando.  “Those things that you’ve seen in the most intense horror films, those things that have reached deep inside your soul and scared you, will now surround you.  We will bring them alive and they will be coming for you.”

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights runs September 25-26, October 1-4, 8-11, 15-18, 21-25 and 28-31.  Amusement Today has cited Halloween Horror Nights as the country’s best Halloween event for the second year in a row based on a survey of theme park fans from around the world.

Tickets for Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights start as low as $39.99 plus tax. Tickets can be purchased at or by calling 1-888-467-7677 (HORROR-7). Due to the event’s popularity, tickets for weekend nights are expected to sell out and should be purchased well in advance. For special deals and vacation offers, visit

For a detailed listing of each haunted house, scarezone and show featured at this year’s event, see below. For more information and images, visit

Daily updates and exclusive details on Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights are available on the event’s official Facebook fan page: or search on Facebook for “Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights – Orlando OFFICIAL.”

SAW – For years you have come to celebrate Halloween and to witness the weakness of others. The only way to gain redemption for this voyeuristic obsession is to truly know what it means to bleed, to feel weak; to experience pain. Jigsaw will give you this experience. Happy Halloween. Let the games begin.

The Wolfman – Pure. Animalistic. Rage. Take a journey through England’s countryside and come face to fangs with one of the most terrifying creatures to ever explode from the silver screen. Forget everything you thought you knew, and prepare yourself for the sights and sounds of the newest addition to Universal Pictures’ legacy of horror.

Chucky: Friends to the End – Ever wonder what happens when good toys go bad? Chucky has been hard at work, tinkering with your favorite childhood playthings. Nothing is what it seems as you step inside and experience what its like to live in Chucky’s world. This is no Child’s Play.

Dracula: Legacy of Blood – Welcome to Castle Dracula on the night of “The Calling.” Vlad Dracul bids you welcome – be you one of the chosen women who has been called or merely a mortal man. Those who have been chosen must decide whether to join the Dark Prince in everlasting life as his brides, or reject his offer and suffer for all eternity. The blood must be renewed. The fate of the legacy hangs in the balance – Dracula’s legacy of blood.

Frankenstein: Creation of the Damned – It has been a fortnight since his creation caused the castle to be engulfed in flames. Doctor Frankenstein now continues his work to perfect the art of resurrection and regeneration, surrounded by his creations. The Creature has also returned, to make the Doctor pay for the pain and suffering he has had to endure. The Creature will destroy everything in his path to gain redemption, and you are now caught in the middle of this epic battle.

The Spawning – Something “different” has moved in among the sewers of Wyandot County, Ohio. The locals claim that these creatures, these “Sculders,” are two feet tall, with the body of a snake. As a volunteer member of the local water district, it is your civic duty to venture into these pipes and restore the flow. But beware, the locals are wrong about the “Sculders” and the only thing that will be flowing is your blood as it leaves your lifeless body.

Leave it to Cleaver – Samuel Meetz works for the people of Carey, Ohio as a butcher, bringing them the freshest meat possible. With a steady livestock of transients and town

lawbreakers with which to serve, and a staff of volunteers who will preserve their towns deadly secret by any means necessary, there is truly no end in sight for Samuel or his family business. As Sam always says: Meet Me at Meetz…The Z stands for cannibal.

Silver Screams – Julian Browning has been the usher in the Universal Palace since it opened in 1922, of course, he’s been dead since 1940, but he still commands respect for his most beloved films from every patron. Buy a ticket to the Universal Palace, and let Julian usher you into a realm where the horror on the screen is ripped away to reveal a world that is truly terrifying. Features “Shaun of the Dead,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “My Bloody Valentine 3D” and other popular horror films.

Lights, Camera, Hacktion!!! – Hollywood Boulevard is being used as a location for the filming of the next big horror movie to be released in October 2010: The CHAINSAW DRILL TEAM MASSACRE in 3-D. Lights, Camera, Hacktion! Our director, Mas Imair, noted horror film aficionado, is bringing the massacre to life in blood-red terrorcolor. But the actors seem to be taking their direction literally and are “hacking” through the cast and crew. It’s a close encounter of the worst kind as the backlot becomes a hacklot and the streets run red with blood. Are you ready for your close-up?

Cirque Du Freak – Inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming film “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant,” which tells the fantasy-adventure tale of a boy who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares. “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” will be in theaters on October 23.

Horrorwood Die-In – The Hollywood Drive-in has been closed for years, and some say the abandoned grounds are haunted, where late at night the dim flickering images of carnage and chaos, monsters and madmen leave the screen and enter the real world looking for fresh victims to star in their latest horrors.

Apocalypse: City of Cannibals – A whole civilization of war-like carnivorous humanoids emerges from the sewers and underground tunnels of New York, looking for fresh food. Half-humanoid, half-beast and ravenous, these tribal cannibals invade the streets of Manhattan. No one is safe!

Containment – When an experimental bio-nerve gas is accidentally released into the atmosphere, the streets are filled with a toxic green mist that turns anyone that comes in contact with it into an infected, melting glob of flesh and blood.

War of the Living Dead – On a remote island in the Pacific during the last days of World War II, German military attempted to create the unthinkable – a new breed of super-soldier made from the reanimated corpses of the dead. American forces quickly seized the island compound, but not before the reanimate agent was released. The island was quarantined and has remained a secret until now. Fifty years later, the two opposing dead forces are still locked in immortal combat with you caught in the crosshairs.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure – Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted Theodore Logan return with an all new, especially excellent Halloween adventure featuring a who’s who of notorious celebrity guests stars.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: A Tribute – Mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Rocky Horror and other famous Rocky Horror Picture Show characters return, bringing the musical mayhem of the classic horror spoof to life on-screen and on-stage with live performers singing and dancing in outrageous costumes.  The tribute will be interactive with audience participation and on-stage guest involvement

dract tour

The Halloween Dracula Tour takes place next month, October 27-November 3, and there are still openings. Join vampire and horror enthusiasts on the travel adventure of a lifetime which brings thrill-seeking travelers to Transylvania, Romania.

Now is last call for monster mavens to spend Halloween nigh in Dracula’s Castle along with fellow wishing to take the journey through the Romanian countryside following in the footsteps of Bram Stoker’s novel, “Dracula.” There is an equal portion of history, involving Vlad Tepes, plus the myth and mystery surrounding Dracula, and all the ways that Vlad inspired Dracula.

The tour visits Snagov Island, where a secluded monastery contains Vlad’s coffin. There’s a visit to Vlad’s birthplace in the best-preserved medieval town in all of Europe, Sighisoara. This is the region of Transylvania where there were attempts to build a “DraculaLand” theme park. While there, the group also ventures into a haunted graveyard, takes part in a witch trial (a re-creation, that is) and also climbs the historic Clock Tower above the Torture Chamber and torture museum. The group explores the historic ruins of Vlad’s Poenari Castle, the true Castle Dracula, which is as breathtaking as the more tourist-visited Bran Castle, also on the itinerary. One of the cities that the tour visits, Sibiu, was the European Culture Capitol, so mixing the chills & thrills with the cultural aspect will bring the trip to a whole new level. In Sibiu, the group visits the Evangelical Church built in 1300, which contains burial vaults in its crypt connected to both Dracula and the legend of Frankenstein.

Ascending up Borgo Pass into the Carpethian Mountains, travelers follow the path of Jonathan Harker, the character described in the Dracula novel. The group has late-night parties along the way, but the highlight is unquestionably the  gala annual Halloween masquerade ball in Dracula’s Castle, as travelers from all over the U.S., Canada and overseas experience what is the definitive costume celebration, in the dungeon room at Dracula’s Castle in Piatra Fantanele atop the Romanian alps. This costume gala is preceded by an outdoor bonfire with music by local gypsy musicians, followed by a multi-course meal, culminating with a gala monster mash costume extravaganza and dancing into the early morning hours.

Every single traveler will be given a gift “swag bag” filled with vampire & horror tirck or treat goodies new level. A “bloody” good time is guaranteed for all.

“Dracula Tour” is the only fully-escorted, professionally guided vacation organized by fans for fans. The trip is open to all ages, and welcomes couples, families and solo travelers. There is both educational and entertainment value for anyone looking for an unusual week-long ghoulish getaway. Vampire fans, vampire slayers and perhaps even vampires are obviously all welcome, and all get along harmoniously. This is the 12th annual trip to Transylvania presented by Tours of Terror.

Ran into longtime friend of the Dark Lord Bunnykins, Ms. Liisa Ladouceur, last night, who passed along a copy of the postcard you see above. It seems she is part of yet another intriguing dark art project, just in time for everyone’s favourite time of year.

The magical world of the House of Pomegranates will be on display for all to see at Gallery 1313 (1313 Queen St. W., Toronto ON) from October 7 to Oct. 18. Go to for all the details, but highlights include the Press Lit Night on the 16th featuring Tony Burgess (Pontypool Changes Everything), Nancy Baker and Ms. Ladouceur, among others. I’m also fascinated by the “Gothic & Lolita Tea Party” happening on the 18th.

It all looks very creepy, intimate, arty and fun. I wonder if I should dress in black.

Release date: Sept. 22

Label: Anchor Bay Entertainment

Voice cast: Tom Papa, Sheri Moon Zombie, Paul Giamatti

The suave-ass El Superbeasto himself

The suave-ass El Superbeasto himself

The plot: El Superbeasto (Papa) is a washed-up luchador (and horndog egomaniac) who fights crime in Monsterland with his ass-kicking sister Suzi X (Sheri Moon Zombie) when he doesn’t have anything better to do, like macking on undead babes. When foul-mouthed (but hot) stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson) is kidnapped by the ape servant of the evil Dr. Satan (Giamatti: The Amazing Screw-On Head), Beasto and Suzi intervene in a bid to prevent the bad doctor from wedding his unholy bride and earning the “sexy powers of Hell.”

Verdict: A Rob Zombie film that works? Believe it. The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is cock-full (sorry, chock-full) of Nazi zombies, horny robots, big-ass titties, sex, sin and swear words. It’s also funny and smart, and can you believe Zombie got Paul Giamatti do participate. That’s almost A-list legit!

Say what you will about his live-action films, Zombie’s element might actually be animation. His macabre, absurdist but relentlessly populist take on horror is suited to the larger-than-life, colourful shenanigans of the cartoon world… although this isn’t the sort of film you show your kids unless you’ve given up on all form of parental responsibility.

Extras: Meh…Deleted scenes & shots, alternate scenes. Nothing interesting. What about a featurette explaining why it took two years to get released?
