Naming your film Sucker Punch is a dangerous move because it allows critics like me to write things like “Sucker Punch: emphasis on the ‘suck.’”
Now that’s a rather glib assessment of such a visually striking film, but it’s accurate. Sucker Punch looks fantastic, but unlike the quick, startling jab promised by the title, it’s more like a slap in the face to the ideas of character and plot.
Thanks to Perez Hilton (I never thought I’d write that) for posting this image of actor John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in the upcoming The Raven, a new film from director James McTeigue whose last film was the ill-fated Ninja Assassin.
Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) has been cast as Emmett Fields, a detective who partners with Poe to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiance Virginia (Alice Eve) and mimics the author’s work in his killings.
Look for The Raven sometime in 2011.
The Night of Dread happened last night. Organized by Toronto’s Clay & Paper Theatre, the annual event, now in its 11th year, is designed to bring together the community in a pre-Halloween march around the city streets, complete with bands, hand-made costumes and masks. Each year a different fear is mocked. Appropriately enough, this year’s fear was environmental disaster.
The new Space channel horror-comedy Todd & The Book of Pure Evil — about a high school headbanger who discovers the Necronomicon — premieres tonight (Sept. 29) at 9 pm. Although creator Eric Kripke conceived of it as a five-season show, Supernatural begins its sixth season tonight (Sept. 24) at 9 pm. Looks like actor Mitch Pileggi (The X-Files) joins the cast this season, but the real question is will we see more Castiel?
