WRETCHED REVIEWS: “WAKE WOOD”

Posted in DVD, Movies, Reviews, Supernatural with tags , , , , , , , on June 29, 2011 by darklordbunnykins

WAKE WOOD

Starring Aidan Gillen, Eva Birthistle and Timothy Spall

Directed by David Keating

Written by David Keating and Brendan McCarthy

Hammer Films/eOne

It would be tragic to dismiss the Irish film Wake Wood as Pet Sematary meets The Wicker Man, but the comparisons are obvious. Young parents Patrick and Louise (Gillen and Birthistle), mourning the death of their daughter Alice (Ella Connolly), move to the small town of Wake Wood where the residents have a secret: a pagan ritual gives them the power to resurrect their dead loved ones for three days. Patrick and Louise avail themselves of the chance to see their daughter again, but it soon becomes apparent that Lucy hasn’t come back right.

EXCLUSIVE! “THE WICKER TREE” TO PREMIERE AT FANTASIA 2011

Posted in Events, Festivals, Movies, News with tags , , , , , , , on June 27, 2011 by darklordbunnykins

The first wave of announcements for this year’s edition of FanTasia, one of the finest genre festivals on the planet, just hit and The DLB will do a rundown shortly. First announcement (and my favourite) taken straight from the press release:

WORLD PREMIERE OF ROBIN HARDY’S THE WICKER TREE + BOOK LAUNCH
38 years after directing THE WICKER MAN, a film widely hailed as the CITIZEN KANE of genre cinema, Robin Hardy has reteamed with producer Peter Snell and British Lion to make THE WICKER TREE. This hugely eccentric “spiritual sequel”, based on Hardy’s novel COWBOYS FOR CHRIST and featuring performances by Graham McTavish and Christopher Lee, is one of the most hotly anticipated genre films of the decade. Fantasia will be unveiling the world premiere of this Pagan phantasmagoria, in the presence of Hardy and Snell.
The screening night will be a double birthing as it will also feature a book launch for Hardy’s THE WICKER TREE novel, being published in North America for the first time this July!
Furthermore, Fantasia will host a special event that will feature Robin Hardy in conversation with fellow UK filmmaker Richard Stanley (HARDWARE, DUST DEVIL, THE THEATRE BIZARRE – the latter also having its world premiere at the festival), in discussion on the occult, mysticism and moviemaking.

INTERVIEW EXTRA: MARK STRONG TALKS UP “GREEN LANTERN”

Posted in Aliens, Comics, Interviews, Movies with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 17, 2011 by darklordbunnykins

It’s not horror, but we’re sure many genre fans are curious to see how the Green Lantern movie turned out. Plus the DLB got a chance to sit in on a roundtable discussion with one of the film’s co-stars this week, and why let a good posting go to waste?

Mark Strong is best known to movie geeks as crime Frank D’Amico from Kick-Ass and Lord Blackwood in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. He co-stars in Green Lantern as Sinestro, Hal Jordan’s (Ryan Reynolds) mentor, and will be seen next spring in the big-screen version of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars,” John Carter.

BLU-RAY REVIEW: RED RIDING HOOD (2011)

Amanda Seyfried as Valerie

RED RIDING HOOD

Starring Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman and Shiloh Fernandez

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke

Written by David Leslie Johnson

Warner Home Entertainment

Given that the theatrical version of Red Riding Hood was roundly trashed, the DLB opted to watch the “alternate cut” presented on the film’s Blu-ray release which promised a “provocative alternate ending.” Having not seen the film in theatres, we’re not sure what was provocative about it, but we suspect that is so much marketing ballyhoo.

Super 8's Joel Courtney

The Dark Lord Bunnykins spoke yesterday to Joel Courtney, one of the young stars of J.J. Abrams’ monster movie Super 8, about a creature who escapes from a military train and the kids who seek out the truth about what it is. Here are some excerpts from that conversation:

On the camaraderie on screen between all the kids in “Super 8.” “We got along as brothers, really. Throughout the entire audition process, over the entire summer, so halfway through the audition process, Zack [Mills] showed up and then Ryan [Lee] and then Riley [Griffiths] and then Elle [Fanning] and then Gabe [Basso], in that order. So when they started coming back I thought, ‘This is a really good thing that they keep showing up,’ and I really like it. So we went into the movie being really good friends, halfway through we were best friends… and then we came out being brothers.”
