13th Planet/AFM Records

Being a Ministry fan has had its challenges in recent years. The drug- and Democrat-induced torpor of the industrial music pioneers’ mid-‘90s output, coming as it did after their inventive ‘80s oeuvre, was off-putting, as was much of mainman Al Jourgensen’s Dubya-dependent turn-of-the-century work, although 2003’s Animositisomina was equal parts terrifying and terrific.

The Dark Lord Bunnykins recently chatted with the comic genius who is Will Ferrell regarding his brilliant new comedy Casa de mi Padre, which you should all go see.

During my researches, I realized that Ferrell is a producer on Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s English-language debut, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which casts Gemma Arterton and Jeremey Renner as the titular fairytale survivors fifteen years after their encounter with the witch and now working as, well, witch hunters.

What was it like working with Tommy?

He’s obviously really smart. We loved his movie (Dead Snow) and thought there’s someone here with a lot of talent, and when he pitched this idea of the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel and kind of putting it on its ear so to speak and making them these assassins, we just thought that was a great reinvention of that whole thing. And he just had a great take on how you could inject that world with Metallica and make it this crazy kind of badass action-adventure, and we thought that is grounds for a potential kind of series in a way. And it just felt clever and imaginative and something that we were excited to get behind.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters comes out Jan. 11, 2013.

Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese and Eric Sheffer Stevens

Directed by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau

Written by Laura Lau

Indie darling Elizabeth Olsen follows up her star-making turn in last fall’s Martha Marcy May Marlene with Silent House, a remake of 2010’s La casa muda, a Uruguayan horror film which received some attention when it played Cannes. Open Water’s Chris Kentis helms the remake with that film’s producer Laura Lau co-directing and writing the script. Both films are based around the hook that everything takes place in one continuous shot in real time. Fortunately, Silent House surpasses that gimmick thanks to Olsen’s riveting performance and an ending that imbues the film with more soul than one might expect.

The DLB recently sat in on a roundtable with the young stars of the party movie Project X, opening this weekend, and got a quote from actor Thomas Mann about his involvement with Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming Hollywood debut Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters which casts Jeremy Renner (upcoming The Avengers) and Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) as the titular siblings who have grown up to become, um, witch hunters.

On the film’s tone:

The tone of the film, it’s sort of Tarantino-esque. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a really fun movie, but it’s also very dark and gory. It’s a hard R, lots of blood and guts. It’s like the original fairytale Hansel & Gretel but it takes place 15 years later so Hansel and Gretel are grown up and they’re with bounty hunters. So basically they hunt witches.

On his character Ben:

And I’m like their biggest fan. They come to my town where there’s like a witch infestation. I become like their sidekick.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters opens January 11, 2013.
