Director Neil Jordan’s vampire drama Byzantium is finally getting a Canadian release this weekend. The melancholy film stars Saoirse Ronan (The Host) as Eleanor, a vampire (although that word is never used) tired of living on the run with Clara (Gemma Arterton, St. Trinians). The DLB had the chance to speak to Ronan during last year’s Toronto International Film Festival during a roundtable with the young Irish star.

The DLB recently sat in on a roundtable with the young stars of the party movie Project X, opening this weekend, and got a quote from actor Thomas Mann about his involvement with Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming Hollywood debut Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters which casts Jeremy Renner (upcoming The Avengers) and Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) as the titular siblings who have grown up to become, um, witch hunters.
On the film’s tone:
The tone of the film, it’s sort of Tarantino-esque. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a really fun movie, but it’s also very dark and gory. It’s a hard R, lots of blood and guts. It’s like the original fairytale Hansel & Gretel but it takes place 15 years later so Hansel and Gretel are grown up and they’re with bounty hunters. So basically they hunt witches.
On his character Ben:
And I’m like their biggest fan. They come to my town where there’s like a witch infestation. I become like their sidekick.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters opens January 11, 2013.
