It’s hard not to get excited about a movie when the director is excited. When I spoke to director Darren Lynn Bousman back in summer 2009 from the Winnipeg set of Mother’s Day for Rue Morgue Magazine, the Saw II – IV director was ecstatic about the film’s progress and his cast, which included Rebecca De Mornay as the titular psycho mom.

So seeing Mother’s Day released straight to video (sorry, DVD and Blu-ray) nearly three years after completion of filming made me think that a) Bousman was getting screwed or b) the movie must be awful, despite fellow horror journalists reporting how good it was. Fortunately, the latter has turned out to be (mostly) the truth.

SINISTER CINEMA: “MOTHER’S DAY” PLAYS RUE MORGUE’S CINEMACABRE TONIGHT!

Rue Morgue Magazine‘s monthly movie night happens again this evening, with the Charles Kaufman camp classic Mother’s Day (1980) screening at 9:30 at The Bloor Cinema. Mother’s Day, the tale of two backwoods brothers who torment a trio of city girls at the behest of their momma, was reviled in its time for its exploitative nudity and violence, and we can’t blame the protestors as the sleaze is pretty thick. Feel free to bring your own bar of soap.

1980’s Mother’s Day is a semi-classic exploitation film, and one of Troma Studios’ best-known works. Filming recently wrapped in Winnipeg on the Brett Ratner-produced remake/reimagining, with Rebecca De Mornay in the role of Mother. Repo! The Genetic Opera‘s Darren Lynn Bousman directed. Here is Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman talking about the new version of Mother’s Day.
