The Toronto After Dark Film Festival returns to the newly renovated Bloor Hot Docs Cinema this year, opening with two highly anticipated entries, the Irish horror comedy Grabbers, screening at 6:45, and The Soska Sisters’ blackly comic American Mary¬†(as seen above).

As I’m about to head out the door to see Paranormal Activity 4 (review tomorrow), The DLB will have to cut and paste each summary:

Toronto After Dark returns to The Bloor Cinema tonight for the final installment of its summer series. First up, at 7 pm, is music video director Joseph Kahn’s Detention. The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson stars in this horror comedy about a killer stalking the halls of Grizzly Lake, and reviews have been surprisingly positive.

Next up, at 9:45pm is V/H/S. A found footage anthology film that scared the shit out of Sundance audiences, it sees a group of thieves screening a series of disturbing videotapes during the search for a piece of rare footage. Directors on the film include David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Ti West, Chad Villella, Justin Martinez, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Nicholas Tecosky, Simon Barrett and Tyler Gillett.

TADFF REVIEWS: WAR OF THE DEAD

Posted in History, Movies, Reviews, Supernatural, Zombies with tags , , , , , , on October 24, 2011 by darklordbunnykins

WAR OF THE DEAD

Starring Andrew Tiernan, Samuel Vauramo and Mikko Leppilampi

Written by Barr B. Potter and Marko Markilaasko

Directed by Marko Markilaasko

Good things do not always come to those who wait. Finnish filmmaker Marko Markilaasko, for instance, filmed the WWII Nazi zombie movie War of the Dead back in 2007, but it only had its world premiere this past Saturday night at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. Likewise, Toronto audience members who had been excitedly tracking the film since that time were greeted by a middling action movie with little horror content whose atrocious script left little meat for its cast to chew upon.

TORONTO AFTER DARK PREVIEW: “I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE”

Posted in Events, Festivals, Gore, Movies, Rue Morgue, Violence with tags , , , , , , on August 19, 2010 by darklordbunnykins

It’s the penultimate night of Toronto After Dark tonight, and The DLB will unfortunately be missing the 7 pm screening of Christopher Smith’s Black Death in order to attend a special soiree I will report on tomorrow. It may or may not have something to do with the 9:45 screening this evening of I Spit On Your Grave, the remake of the 1978 shocker of the same name.

Like the original, the remake is about a young writer (Sarah Butler) raped and brutalized by a trio of thugs who exactly bloody vengeance. Director Steven R. Monroe will be in attendance to participate in a post-screening Q&A, and The DLB is hoping to snag him for a brief interview. Fingers and paws crossed.

TORONTO AFTER DARK: “THE LAST EXORCISM” PREVIEW & REVIEW

Posted in Devils, Festivals, Movies, News, Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , on August 16, 2010 by darklordbunnykins

The DLB had the chance to see The Last Exorcism last week and was duly impressed (see review below). The Eli Roth-produced horror show opens Aug. 27, and Toronto After Dark is showing the film tonight (Monday, Aug. 16) at 7 pm at The Bloor Cinema. In attendance will be Roth and cast members Ashley Bell and Patrick Fabian. I’ll be interviewing the trio Monday afternoon so look for those interviews the week of Aug. 27th, leading up to its national release.

TORONTO AFTER DARK REVIEW: CARGO

CARGO

Starring Anna-Katharina Schwabroh, Martin Rapold and Regula Grawiller

Directed by Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter

Written by Arnold H. Bucher, Ivan Engler, Patrik Steinman and Thilo Roscheisen

The Swiss are known for their watches and their neutrality, not for making sci-fi films, which makes the very existence of Cargo amusing.
